Two places that each gave me something the Rockies don't.
Southern Iceland, where glacier ice grounds on black volcanic sand and basalt columns meet the North Atlantic — the coolest, most restrained work I've made. And Portugal, which is the opposite: yellow trams against grey stone, worn ochre plaster, and cities built on hills steep enough to be absurd.
