The animal, and the place it lives in.
Sometimes that means close enough to see the water still running off a mink's whiskers. Other times it means leaving the elk small in the frame — marks in the snow — so the size of the valley registers before you find them. Both are the same job. An animal with nothing around it is only half the photograph.
